4 Words for Landscape Perfection - Repetition Sequence Balance And Rhythm

By Kent Higgins

Your success in producing a beautiful landscape on your property will depend upon how well you can combine the many plant forms, textures (mainly of foliage) and colors at your disposal to give a result that is pleasant and orderly. Doing this is called landscape composition. And since you cannot see your entire property from one point at one time, it leads you into a complicated but most interesting and quite intriguing art.

The "trick of the trade" is to make a landscape plan for the entire property right at the very beginning so you can visualize the completed landscape picture as a unit. In this unit three of our most important ingredients will be repetition, sequence, and balance. But since you are mainly concerned with a landscape project involving home grounds instead of a large estate, do not let yourself get too involved in the complexities of the composition.

The larger the land area, and the more plant material and land forms you have to work with, the easier it is to work all of them into the picture. Yet even on the average home grounds, it is possible to work in these three factors of repetition, sequence, and balance, though on a much simpler scale. At times it will be almost impossible to use one or more of the factors; because of cramped quarters at other times it will not be necessary to be so thorough in the design.

Be practical, and consider them, therefore, as desirable but not essential components. Should you have sufficient funds to make hiring a landscape designer or landscape architect a worthwhile investment, then, naturally, you should expect him to incorporate these elements of composition into your landscape.

Repetition

When we say that we seek unity in a garden through repetition, sequence, and balance we simply mean that any one part of the garden shall be a definite and integral part of the whole. For example, you often see a property on which there are a dozen or more flowering trees in bloom, no two of which are alike. How much more pleasant it would be if, let us say, a white dogwood burst into bloom in the public area at the same time that two or three other white dogwoods were blooming in the service or private area, or both.

A person walking around the property would definitely notice that the same kind of tree was in bloom in the front yard as was flowering in the backyard. This is a very simple illustration of repetition in that the same type tree has been used in planting all three areas of your plan.

Sequence

As an example of sequence in design consider a series of promontories developed along a shrub border so arranged that, from one particular position - a patio, say - in the rear of the house, the observer could see the tips of all of them. His attention would move easily from the promontory nearest him to the next one, and finally to the third at the far end of the property. The same thing could involve a series of tree trunks, the observer's attention moving from one tree trunk to another tree trunk farther across the property.

Balance

The third element or factor that goes into the making of a landscape composition is balance. It is the simplest for an observer to notice and perhaps the easiest to attain in a landscape planting that is developed along formal lines. Though less easy to achieve in an informal design, it is nevertheless within the grasp of amateurs.

For all practical intents and purposes we can say that balance in the formal garden is attained by having on the left side of the garden everything that there is on the right side, meaning details of design, plants like dracaena magenta plant, color, texture, etc.

In an informal garden design, however, the balance would have to be maintained through an equilibrium of interests. For example, picture yourself looking from a patio out across the private area to a terminal feature such as a bench or a birdbath. Since the garden is not formal, no obvious symmetrical balance will be apparent. However, assume that to the left of the terminal feature there is the tall, prominent spike of an upright evergreen. In a typical symmetrically balanced picture, a second specimen of the same type of tree would stand at the right of the birdbath in the same relative position.

However, in order to achieve balance in an unsymmetrical manner (or, as it is called, "occult balance") we use, not the same type plant for a counter-balance, but something else that will hold our attention just as forcefully as does the upright evergreen. It might be a very striking dark green evergreen of spreading type just to the right of the terminal feature. In spite of the fact that the two evergreens are absolutely different in shape and texture, they are still in balance as far as our attention is concerned. This type of balance is not too easily conceived or noticed by the casual observer, but he will be unconsciously pleased by the effect. To the more experienced observer the good taste and careful planning of the gardener will be immediately apparent.

The two elements most easily worked into the plan for a small property are balance and repetition; Sequence is more difficult. Of the three, repetition is perhaps the most important, and undoubtedly the one that you will use most easily and most frequently. Through the use of all three you will achieve landscape harmony.

Rhythm

Another factor involved in a good landscape composition is the matter of rhythm. An example would be the repetition over and over again of some identical item at regular intervals, like the beat in music.

Picture a formal garden area enclosed by a formal hedge so clipped as to give an effect of square pillars every so many feet apart with the top of the hedge between them forming a gentle curve from the top of one pillar to the top of the next, swooping down between them much as a chain would. The constant repetition of pillars and gentle curves one after another would cause a definite feeling of rhythm as one looked down the length of the hedge. This could be done on a small scale in an average backyard just as effectively as on an estate.

Do not become confused or discouraged by these technical terms and discussions of apparently complicated items. On small properties many of them can be omitted and a very pleasing garden still result. Let me repeat that the two most important objectives for the beginner to work toward are repetition and balance. - 30228

Solar Garden Lights - a Modern Way to Light up Your Garden

By John Monsholi

Solar garden lights help homeowners to safeguard anyone in their garden, whether it is pets, children or the homeowners themselves, from getting an electric shock. Solar garden lights are lights powered by the sunlight. These lights illuminate the need in wiring, helping the homeowners to save on the electric, as well as, such lights are very easy to install.

Solar garden lights produce light with the aid of solar energy, which is the only powerful free of charge natural source of energy on earth. Unique solar cells are capable of generating electric, when exposed to the sun for long enough. A rechargeable battery makes the unit capable of storing the energy and producing light when an electric current is passed through special diodes.

Modern technologies allow solar garden lights to keep improving, producing more light for longer.

Main advantages of solar garden lights are:

1. Solar garden lights can be easily assembled, installed and relocated if such need arises. All that is needed for the lights to work is the sunshine in the daytime.

2. Solar garden lights are much safer than regular lighting, since they operate with a very low voltage.

3. Solar garden lights allow a homeowner to save on electric and on fossil fuels costs, since these lights are powered by DC (direct current) electricity, requiring merely a common battery for the lights to operate.

4. Integrated photo sensors make the lights go on, when there is no sunshine and to go off when the sun is shining, providing ultimate convenience. Most of the solar garden lights are also equipped with an on and off button.

5. Solar garden lights are very environmentally friendly, since they do not produce dangerous pollutants, common for regular electricity utilities.

6. Solar garden lights are compact, fashionable and attractive. They are notorious for creating a special pleasant atmosphere in any garden.

7. Solar garden lights may provide you with up to 8-9 hours of light with merely 4 hours of direct sun exposure. Good lights will also provide you with an evening glow even during the autumn and winter months with limited sunshine.

8. These lights eliminate the need in electrical wiring and electric sockets for the lights to operate. This in turn means that there are no wires to be damaged.

Before purchasing solar garden lights for your landscaping, please note the following:

1. Some solar garden lights come with a weak plastic spike to put the lights in the ground. It is better to opt for the lights with spikes made of metal.

2. Some lights are meant for nice appearance rather than for bright light, and they may just glow instead of emitting a bright light. Other lights may be short lived in the evening. If you are looking for brighter solar garden lights, which would emit light for many hours, you should look for lights with a larger area of solar cells and higher capacity batteries. The light intensity varies from one type of light to another.

3. The best solar garden lights should be perfectly weatherproof. Otherwise, if it rains and the water starts to leak into the sealed solar panel, the lights will most likely stop working.

4. Remember that on rainy and cloudy days, solar garden lights will not work for as long as they would work on bright and sunny days. That is why it is important to place the lights, where there is sun in your garden in the day.

5. If your lights do not work properly, the most common reasons for that will be: rusty batteries, rusty battery terminals or poor quality of the batteries.

6. It is better to choose solar garden lights with the built in Off/On button for your convenience.

The bottom line

Solar garden lights are low cost, safe and a modern way to light up your landscapes. Solar garden lights will provide any landscaping with a special relaxing atmosphere. These lights are environment friendly and cost efficient. - 30228

The Quick and Easy Guide to Landscape Tools

By Jeremy Szechenyi

Landscaping is a great way to improve the appearance of your yard, and landscape tools are essential for any landscaping project. There are many tools out there, some made for one specific job. The best thing you can do is to purchase a basic group of tools that you can multi-task with, and add specialized tools one at a time as you need them. The basic group of tools is listed below.

The shovel is the first group of tools.

Group 2 is the rake

The third tool group is the pruner, shear or lopper.

Group 4 is the garden cart or wheel barrel.

The first tool group is the shovel, which is a flattened piece of metal attached to a handle. The main use for a shovel is to move material from place to place. There are many different variations of the shovel. The main types are the rounded or pointed tip shovel. This type digs into material well, and is perfect for digging holes in the ground. The second type is the flat shovel. This one has a wider surface area, and is perfect for scooping from rock or gravel piles. The last shovel is the narrow shovel. These are perfect for digging in tight quarters or for making small holes in the ground.

Group 2 is the rake. It has a long handle with the rake head attached. Two main types are commonly seen, the leaf rake and bow rake. The leaf rake has thinner prongs. These pick up leaves and lighter material, but do not damage the ground below. The bow rake is heavier and sturdier, meant for moving heavy items like rocks and gravel.

Group 3 is the lopper, shear or pruner. These tools cut, snip and trim. Pruners are single hand devices made to cut through smaller, but still tough, items. These are good for precision work. Loppers are two-handed devices, intended to cut heavier and bigger items like tree limbs. The shear, commonly seen as a grass shear, is a two-handed device made to cut through thinner items, but in longer cuts. It is used mainly for shaping items like hedges and shrubs.

Group 4 is the garden cart or wheel barrel. These tools are essential for moving bulky or heavy materials around. The main difference is that garden carts have two wheels and wheel barrels one. Garden carts have lower maneuverability, but great stability. Wheel barrels are the opposite, with higher maneuverability and lower stability.

If you plan to undertake any landscaping project, whether big or small, you will need some tools. The basic tool groups listed and explained above will give you the ability to perform many tasks outside, and successfully complete your project. - 30228

Low Voltage Outdoor Lighting - One of the Most Safeguard Low Cost Landscape Lighting Options

By John Monsholi

Low voltage outdoor lighting is an easy to implement, safe and a low-cost way to light up your yard. In order to set up the system, you won't even have to pay for an electrician, since most likely you will be able to set up your low voltage outdoor lighting on your own.

Low voltage outdoor lighting runs on a 12-volt current, which is achieved with the aid of a transformer, rendering the dangerous 110/120-volt current to a relatively safe 12-volt current. The electricity is transmitted through a special weather-resistant low voltage cable, which begins and ends at the transformer (creating a looped run).

Low voltage outdoor lighting has several important advantages, the main ones being:

1. A homeowner can set up his/her own low voltage outdoor lighting system hassle free, with the use of a special kit. Such kit usually includes all of the needed components, such as the cable, a transformer and the fixtures. The only needed component that is not included in the kit is the bulbs. However, it would not be prudent to include the bulbs in the kits, since every bulb may have a different wattage.

2. Low voltage outdoor lighting helps you to save money on the electric. The bulbs used for the lighting may be 4 W light bulbs. There are also available fluorescent lamps and fluorescent lamps, the latter being currently the most cost-efficient.

3. Timers are another very useful feature, allowing you to set the time for the lighting to go on/off for 4, 6, or 8-hours. Some low voltage outdoor lighting systems also include a photocell, which can turn the lights on at night and turn it off in the daytime.

4. Low voltage outdoor lighting is very important for security. Many systems come with heat motion sensors, which would notify you about any intruders after dark.

5. Low voltage outdoor lighting is very easy to relocate, since the wires do not have to be buried deeply and permanently in the ground. The wires can be just slightly buried.

6. A transformer for low voltage outdoor lighting can range anywhere from 150 W and up to 900 W. It would probably be a good idea to purchase a transformer with a little more muscle, so that you can expand your lighting system if you decide to start using the bulbs with more watts.

7. In order to pick the correct cable for your low voltage outdoor lighting system, you would need to know the amount of watts that your system will require. The most common size wire is 12ga, which is capable of carrying 300 W. There also are 14 ga. and 16 ga. cables, which respectively can carry 200 W and 150 W.

8. Another benefit of the low voltage outdoor lighting system is that it can be built to fit any required lighting design. The lights for the system may include a tree hung moonlighting fixtures, in-ground fixtures, spotlights, and deck lighting in order to easily find your way around your garden after the sun goes down.

9. Another advantage of the low voltage outdoor lighting systems is their low cost. Not only the systems may cost anywhere starting from $15, but they also help the homeowner save a lot on the energy costs. However, keep in mind that a sound quality system will usually cost anywhere around $300.

10. Simple mathematical calculations will help you estimate how many light bulbs you can use in your system, as well as what will be the average wattage of each bulb. Simply multiply the number of the bulbs in your system by their wattage, and you will find out what the wattage of the transformer is that you need for your lighting system.

Several things to consider when implementing a low voltage outdoor lighting system:

1. Always plug the transformer of your lighting system directly into the power outlet, without using an extension cord between the electrical outlet and the transformer.

2. If the wires of your low voltage outdoor lighting system are not buried deeply, they will be more prone to getting damaged.

3. The extra wattage of the transformer should not exceed one-third of the total needs of the system.

Low voltage outdoor lighting is among the most secure, affordable and easy to set up systems to light up your garden. Most homeowners get amazed with their gorgeous secure garden, after implementing a low voltage outdoor lighting system. - 30228

Landscape Tools: Why are They Important for Landscaping Projects?

By Jeremy Szechenyi

Tackle landscaping projects with the help of landscape tools. Tools are essential items when it comes to these projects because you are dealing with a lot of heavy, bulky, and tough things. There are many tools out there, but a few basic groups should be in everyone's landscape tool arsenal. These are below in a list.

Group 1 is the shovel.

The second tool group is the rake.

The pruner, shear or lopper is the third group of tools.

The wheel barrel or garden cart is the fourth group of tools.

The shovel is the first group of tools. It is a piece of metal that has been flattened and attached to a handle. These allow you to carry and move materials around. There are three main types of shovels. The flat shovel has a wide surface area, and is a relatively flat piece of metal. It is good for moving scoops from a rock or gravel pile. The second one is the rounded or pointed tip shovel. This is good for slicing and digging in the soil. It is the classic shovel that most people think of. The last is the narrow shovel. It works well for digging smaller holes and in tight spaces.

The pruner, shear or lopper is the third group of tools, which trim and clip. Long grass shears have long blades that cut well through light material. Loppers are made for power, and to cut through thick branches and tree limbs. Small pruners are very common, and work well for smaller, tough items.

January Garden Calendar - What To Do

By Marshall Clewis

In Northern United States and Canada

Now is the time to check out seed catalogs and online along with placing orders. Early in the month sow seeds of Clarkia, Godedia, Larkspur, Stocks and other annuals for Spring bloom in the greenhouse. Toward the end of January sow in the greenhouse Wax Begonias, Lobelias, Vinca roses, Delphiniums and Pansies for Summer bloom outdoors...

Remove pots of bulbs, such as Hyacinths, Daffodils and Tulips, that are to be forced for early bloom, a few at a time, from the cool basement or sand bed outdoors where they have been rooting, and bring them into the greenhouse or house. Shade them for the first few days and give them lots of water at all times. Keep them cool at first; increase the temperature gradually.

As soon as dormant potted Amaryllis bulbs show signs of life, remove a little of the old surface soil, replace with rich new soil, water thoroughly and place the pots in a warm, light location in the greenhouse or house. Pot new Amaryllis bulbs in well-drained pots of fertile sandy soil.

Disperse heavy accumulations of snow on evergreens by shaking the branches. Allow snow to remain on coldframes until it melts naturally. It provides good insulation. Branches of Christmas trees may be laid over evergreen perennials (such as Dianthus, Helianthemums and Candytuft) to give protection from sun and wind. Check tools and supplies now. Winter passes all too swiftly and with its end comes the immediate need for these. Make sure that the tools and implements you have are in good working condition. Buy whatever new ones you need. Also, make a list of the fertilizers, sprays and other supplies you will require and order them in.

In the South

Make sowings of annuals for early bloom either outdoors or in coldframes as soon as weather permits. In the lower South sow Carrots, Lettuce, Onions, Peas, Spinach and other hardy vegetable crops. Set out Cabbage plants and Onion sets. Plant Asparagus, Rhubarb and Horseradish. Proceed with preparing ground for later plantings. Almost all garden soils will benefit from having rotted manure, compost or other decayed organic matter incorporated into them.

Finish pruning Grapevines and complete the pruning of other fruits before new growth begins. Also, before new growth starts, apply dormant sprays to such fruit trees and ornamentals as need this treatment. Plant bulbs of Ranunculus, Tuberoses, Gerberas and Ismenes for Summer bloom. In the lower and middle South do not delay the planting of trees, shrubs, Gerberas, evergreens and Roses.

On the West Coast

Prune leaf-losing fruits and ornamentals that need this attention and complete this work before mid-February. Rose pruning should be done now in California. Attend to dormant spraying before new growth starts but not when night temperatures are likely to go below 35 degrees. In California gardens prepare plots for vegetables and make sowings of the hardiest kinds. Fertilize lawns and dig out patches of invading Bermuda Grass. Make early plantings of such bulbs and tubers as Begonias, Calla Lilies, Gladioli, Gloxinias and Tigridias. In southern California sow annuals, set out perennials and, following rains, plant trees and shrubs. - 30228

How To Construct A Garden By Using Professionals

By Connor Sullivan

After having that dream house built, most people forget that there are other parts of the property that need some help and that is the garden or outside areas. Simi Valley landscapers are well versed in all aspects of designing and creating all outdoor areas including the pool area. By conferencing with Simi Valley landscaping, the problem of what to plant where will be taken care of because they are experts in the field - no pun intended!

Even if a move is imminent into a new dwelling place, the garden area may not be all that it could be. In this case, it is better to call in the professionals to take on what could be a difficult job.

The first task to be undertaken is the blueprint of what is required for the family. Is there enough room for a pool, or do the children need a play area constructed, are just some of the main points. Pathways leading through and around these fixed structures have to be planned very carefully so that security or such like are not compromised.

Many will not realize how important it is to have the correct color scheme for the whole overall effect to 'pop' and please the eye. Many people will have favorite plants or trees but the professional will know what plants and trees will compliment each other and details that the homeowner may not be aware of. How big will the plant or tree grow; is it slow or fast growing; will it need water every day; will it deprive other plants of nutrients and water etc. These are just a few ideas for the initial questions to be asked. Also of concern will the consistency of the soil type, plant adaptability and color schemes. Perhaps the homeowner would like winter color more than summery flowers. This will have to be taken into account to get the best out of the space available.

Irrigation is another aspect the contactor to take into consideration especially if the home is in an arid or semi arid area. Plants will not survive if they don't get the water that they need and who wants to be thinking about all that work all the time? This would only work if the space was like a 'postage stamp'. Pipes and taps are situated around the garden so that the homeowner can decide when and where to water. Plants rarely need water all day and night so timers can be installed to water at the best times. This is usually during the evening or night so that the plants can have a chance to soak up the water before the sun comes up and evaporates any excess moisture.

Whatever is planned for the garden, it is obvious that the professionals are the best people to design and build a beautiful landscape for the homeowner. One more plus for using professionals is that the property value is likely to increase because of a professionally designed outside space. How the garden is designed. Many people will make up their minds to buy a property solely on how the whole property 'sits' in the garden. What better reason to employ the great services of a very professional team! - 30228

An Overview Of Garden Lights Placement

By Abel Brockman

Adding garden lights to one's garden provides an individual with a vast array of choices and opportunities. The costs can be vastly different from very affordable kits that one installs on their own to lights that require transformers, electricians, and landscapers to install. For an individual who is not sure if they are going to take on this project on their own or hire a professional these tips may help in the decision making process.

Deciding which areas in the garden should be highlighted when it is dark is the first step towards installing garden lights. An easy way to find out where the lights should be located around these areas is to take pictures from the angle that the lights will be installed. This is much easier than trying to move the lights and will allow an individual more flexibility in deciding how many lights to use in specific areas of the garden.

Next, find the areas of your home that do not get adequate light at night. Perhaps it is a dark walkway where there is a single bulb at one end. Perhaps it is on a path leading towards the porch of the home. Many people who have lived in their home for several years do not think about how hard it is to navigate steps or paths in the dark when one is not familiar with the walkway.

In a region where the sun does not shine year round solar lights will work in areas that do not depend on light at night. One would not want to use solar lighting exclusively on a walk or pathway if the lights were not going to work effectively. However, most of the solar pathway lights are more affordable than low voltage lighting and one may want to consider distributing them evenly along a pathway so that there is always light available.

Using a plot map of the property will allow one to mark those areas that low level lights should be installed, up lighting should be placed, and pathway lights should be. It will be easier to decide if conduit is needed for the amount of lights that are used if it is drawn on a plot map first. In addition one will be able to draw a diagram for placement of the conduit when it is ready to be installed.

Low voltage lights have been designed specifically for use on garden pathways and steps. These lights create soft pools which light the way for people walking along a path or coming up the steps of a home. When looking for these lights it is important to test the light and make sure that no light escapes from the encasement upward. In wet climates or areas that may flood one will want to get lights that have been rated for marine use. These lights are water resistant and will remain intact through harsh winters.

Brighter up lights will go in those areas that you identified as focal points. These lights will shine up to enhance and highlight your focal point or create shadows of light around it. When installing these lights they provide the best effect when placed very close to low shrubbery out of sight. This also protects the lights so that a lawnmower or weed eater does not inadvertently damage them.

Down lights are more expensive than traditional porch lights. However they produce the same effective. Down lights do not emit glare on the street or sidewalk when they are on. They focus the light directly downwards with a pool forming below the area they are spotlighting.

When a plan has been drawn and a person has figured out how big the task will be to install garden lights they may choose to call a professional for assistance. For large yards there may be the need to lay electrical conduit and test outlets which should always be done by someone knowledgeable and trained in this area. For the smaller garden one may want to begin the project themselves by purchasing the necessary kits to do a small part of the garden to see if it is something they feel comfortable doing. - 30228

Secrets To A Clean Koi Pond: Using All Natural Products

By Trey Casselman

Owning a koi pond requires regular maintenance in order to keep the nutrients in balance. A healthy and clean pond insures that it will sustain life without the aggravation of fungi and other unwanted diseases. A healthy koi pond is beautiful. One way to achieve this is to clean the pond naturally with products such as Bioverse's all-natural pond cleaners.

Using natural solutions to clean any type of ponds limits the amount of foreign organisms to the water and surrounding areas. The cleaners are made of naturally derived ingredients to gently clean the water. Although, just because it's natural, doesn't mean it has to be used any more than that of the chemical cleaner. Most of the treatments used should only be directly put into the water once a month to maintain the delicate balance of nutrients.

Here are a few things to think about when looking for a natural cleaner.

1. Make sure the product is biodegradable. If it isn't, the ingredients of the solution will not break down in the soil. Being biodegradable is also a sign of being eco-friendly and won't hurt the environment around the pond.

2. Make sure the product is safe. Keep in mind the living things that will be around the area. Pets, fish, and children will, in some way, will come in contact with the pond. Therefore, the cleaning product should be gentle enough for them.

3. Is it effective? Although a cleaner being natural and not a danger to the environment, the bottom line is, it should work as a cleaner. It really isn't worth using if it doesn't clean the koi pond as described. There are many different types of ponds so a little research wouldn't hurt before buying a product.

Having a clean koi pond can be easily achieved with the regular use of products such as those from Bioverse. Chemical cleaners can often damage the environment around the pond and possibly harm the wildlife the pond supports. - 30228

Solar Powered Landscape Lighting: Cordless Decorative Lighting

By John Monsholi

Solar powered landscape lighting is a solution to consider for any gardening enthusiast. Solar powered landscape lighting is a substantial step forward in modern landscaping, since solar lighting eliminates one of the major disadvantages of the regular landscape lighting - long, bulky and unsightly wires.

Solar powered landscape lighting uses natural solar energy for emitting light. This type of landscape lighting is both cost effective and environmentally friendly.

No lighting wires in your garden means three main things: children in your garden will not get an electric shock, animals in the garden will not damage the wires as well as such wireless units will be very easy to set up and to relocate in the future.

So why does solar powered landscape lighting become more and more popular each day?

1. Solar powered landscape lighting has no boundaries in choosing the design of your landscape lighting. Solar powered landscape lighting units include floodlights, spotlights, flashlights, garden lights, step lighting, wall lights, hanging path lighting, deck lighting, tube lights, light strings lantern lights, and even amazing floating pool lighting.

2. Solar powered landscape lighting also provides you with a wide choice of materials, such as copper, bronze, stainless steel, metal, plastic, as well as chrome coated units.

3. There are a wide number of decorative lights to choose from for your solar powered landscape lighting design, including glass globes, stone lights, color changing orbs, butterflies, hummingbirds, dragonflies, fireflies, flower lights, lights in the form of mushrooms and so on.

Solar powered landscape lighting does not need any electric to operate. Each unit consists of three parts: light emitting diodes, rechargeable batteries and a solar panel. Solar energy is accumulated in the solar panels, charging the battery and further producing the light through light emitting diodes. Solar powered landscape lighting will produce over 14 hours of light after being charged throughout a sunny day. The solar powered landscape lighting units will also shine in the evening after an overcast day. However, since they did not get fully charged, they will be capable of operating fewer hours after the sun goes down. Solar powered landscape lighting is functional and completely autonomous.

With the use of solar powered landscape lighting units, you can illuminate your garden paths, stairs, alpine slides, polls, flowerbeds and other landscapes in your garden. Solar powered landscape lighting can be set up anywhere, where the sun shines in the daytime in your garden. Many of the units can be placed on the walls and polls with the use of brackets. Photo sensors will make your landscape lighting automatically turn on in the evening, shining until the morning. Throughout the whole day, the units will be charging, and then they will start shining on the next evening. Most models come with an integrated button to switch your lights on and off whenever you wish to do so.

Other advantages of solar powered landscape lighting are that solar-powered lights will never burn out, they require no maintenance, as well as, they do not use any electricity. Installation does not require wiring or expensive landscape works - simply stick the lights in the ground or hang them where you want them, and they will start working as soon as the battery gets charged. This landscape lighting does not get damaged by rain, fog or snow, as well as it withstands temperatures from 14 F (-10 C) to 122 F (+50 C), and serves for more than 10 years. Solar powered landscape lighting is practical, decorative, autonomous lighting, allowing you to implement your most creative landscape ideas. - 30228

Public Landscape Area

By Kent Higgins

When developing the public area, we need only keep in mind three fundamental landscape principles that concern this particular part of a property. They are: (1) soften the architectural lines of the building by placing plants where the strong vertical lines meet the ground; (2) frame the building with trees; and (3) maintain an open lawn area.

We could state the first principle even more simply by saying that the plants should be located at the corners of the building and at either side of the entrances.

Architectural Lines

Height of Plants

In nearly every case the plants to be used at the corners of the building should be of a type that will naturally grow larger than those to be used at either side of the doorway. Generally speaking, the ideal ultimate height of a plant at the corner of a one- or two-story building should be a little less than half the distance from the ground to the eaves.

In deciding what plants to use, we must find out what their ultimate height must be if they are to soften the lines of the house. First, sketch the front of the house to scale (or use a photograph and tracing paper).

Then, following the above method draw straight lines from points on each outside edge of the house slightly less than halfway to the eaves, to the center of the front door sill. Note also that the plants on either side of the door should eventually reach only about as high as the line is at that particular point.

Plants at the corners of the house are always taller than those next to the front door. The one exception to this rule occurs when the house has corner windows that wrap around both sides of the house. Many times you will see that although the plants immediately under the windows are lower than, or just about the same height as, those at the entrance, the original thought of having taller plants at the corners is carried out by the addition of small flowering trees or larger shrubs at a distance from the window. This gives the same effect, but does not sacrifice ventilation or light through the corner windows.

Pointed Plants

If possible, do not use plants which come to a sharp point at either doors or windows. But there is rare exception to this rule: Suppose that you have a house with very tall, narrow windows, or high-peaked gables or dormers; the natural surroundings include sharp-pointed evergreens and jagged mountain tops. In this case pointed plants like ficus alii at doors and windows would fit the environment.

Another exception might apply to the owner of a modern ranch home. He might use sharp-pointed plants to break long, straight roof lines. - 30228

The Dandelion Is A Weed

By Neoma Archer

Spring is one of the four seasons and there are plenty of people who would choose spring over the others. According to them, spring is about hope. Spring is also a miracle. This is because they say that after the cold months of winter, spring brings everything around you back to life. That is some kind of magic and that is what spring has the ability to do. This is season is about bringing back all those plants from hibernation and make them alive once more.

The dandelion is one of the plants that springs back to life when the season comes around. It is known for its beautiful flowers. And then there is that part which lawn owners or garden owners hate - when the plant chooses to live in their gardens or lawns. The dandelion to them is a weed and spring is when they are at its peak. This weed comes with broad leaves and has yellow flowers and is known as a perennial weed.

What you should know about dandelions is that despite the beauty that it shows off when it is at its peak, there is something that it is hiding. Now that comes in the form of the taproot. Its taproot goes really deep and it is quite fleshy. This is one of the reasons why it can be difficult to deal with this weed if you want to take it out manually. And what makes dandelions continue to thrive is the fact that when the yellow flowers mature, they then turn to white seeds which are easily blown by the wind to be brought to another parcel of land to grow.

So how do you deal with dandelions? One of the things that you can consider doing is to actually use your might to take them out. But be ready to get sweaty because you also have to make sure that the taproot is also pulled out. Or you can also opt to just use herbicides. Just apply it every five or six weeks. The leaves will wither when you are doing it properly. Using herbicides could mean a duration of six applications to get it done.

If you hate the fact that dandelions may be sprouting in your garden or your lawn any time soon, there are some things that you can do to prevent them from growing in case seeds have found their way in. One is to actually apply pre-emergent herbicide sometime in April so that the seeds do not grow. Or you can also make sure that your lawn is mowed to the second highest so that the grass grows tall and crowded and any dandelion seeds underneath do not get the right sunlight. - 30228

Looking to Buy a Greenhouse for the Garden?

By Spencer Wilkins

The immediate thing you will notice when it comes to greenhouses is just how many different styles and sizes of these there are. But most homeowners who decide to install a greenhouse in their garden they choose to erect a rectangular one as they are easy to erect and don't need too much space.

If you are thinking about getting a greenhouse for the garden the first thing you must decide is whether you choose one that is free standing or which you can place up against a wall of your home. The big advantage of going for the second type is that they take up far less space and also cost less to purchase, however, they won't offer the same amount of space for working inside them easily.

When it comes to stand alone greenhouses these can be sited in any place in the garden where there is space available and you can even ensure that that are hidden from the house if you wish. What is crucial however is that the position you choose is one where it is getting a good amount of sunlight on it each day?

However there are a number of other factors that you need to take into consideration when deciding where your freestanding greenhouse is to be situated in your garden. It is vital that along with it getting lots of sunlight that shade is provided to protect the plants inside when the weather is very hot. If you cannot provide natural shade then you will have to install some shading system inside to provide the plants with the protection they need from the heat of the sun during the hottest part of the day.

Also you will need to factor in how you are intending to keep plants in your greenhouse warm during the winter months. Do you go for an electrically powered system or a free standing heating system? Again this is a cost that you will need to factor in to your budget when deciding which sorts of greenhouses you are considering erecting in your garden. If yours will be situated some distance from the house then the free standing greenhouses are your best option. However, you will need to make sure that the fuel to run them can easily be purchased where you live.

Greenhouses can be erected directly on to soil as long as it is flat and even. However if you don't want pests to get access including moles into yours then it is worth laying some foundations beforehand. Either go for concrete or some paving slabs as the foundations and this will ensure that the surface on to which it is erected is level and protect it from pests. It will also offer protection from the cold that can come up through the soil. - 30228

Landscape Is Determine By The Family

By Keith Markensen

Your family is, perhaps, the chief personal factor in determining what kind of garden you should have. A young couple with no children, or perhaps just one or two, should be able to estimate their future requirements and they should plan their garden accordingly. On the other hand, if the children have grown beyond the sandbox stage, are about to marry, or are married and have established their own homes, a different kind of garden will be in order. Whatever the circumstances, your family and your way of life will have a direct bearing on the nature and design of your garden.

Besides the size and age of your family, you will have to analyze the kind of life you and your family lead. If you like to entertain large groups of friends in the garden, the outdoor living area will dominate the property. But if you do not entertain, extensively, you can reduce this area to devote more space to a larger vegetable or cut flower garden. The extent of the area devoted to vegetables might well be affected by your budget. Growing your own small fruits, bush fruits, and a variety of vegetables can substantially cut your grocery bills.

You will also have to decide what facilities your garden should have for family comfort. In the northern section of the country, where the summers are neither long nor hot, it is a good idea to design the planting of majestic palm so that maximum sunlight will come into the garden. Farther south, and to the southwest, shade is a prime consideration and should be provided for by your plan wherever possible. In the central prairie states or the Texas Panhandle, where the wind is very strong, the arrangement of windbreaks, either large or small, will be an important consideration.

For those who live in a crowded residential area close to business and industrial sections one of the important items will be adequate screening of your property for privacy. It is also good to plant majestic to have a division for your property.

Finally, you should make provision for the sports you and your children enjoy. An area for badminton, basketball, frisbee, or the like, will add immeasurably to the family's enjoyment of the garden. This will, of course, dictate in part the layout of your garden. - 30228

Tips On Where To Get A Great Water Feature For Your Living Area

By Connor Sullivan

When it comes to landscaping gardens and yards, most people will forget to take into account a great addition and that is water. Simi Valley swimming pools have the experience and know how to design the perfect swim spot that fit the property perfectly. The Thousand Oaks swimming pool is just one of the styles that will be perfect for many properties which will be designed to order.

Along with the swim area, there are many other areas of the property that will need development. Once the large structures, like hot tubs and gazebos, are in place, pathways and flower beds will be used to fill in the gaps and give the overall effect desired by the homeowner. Some areas will benefit from features like raised gardens and are great for the elderly.

Plants, particularly, are perhaps the most important factor and the professionals will know which plants will thrive better in the soil and position that they are to be placed. Homeowners have some idea of what it is that they want to achieve but the professional will be able to advise on exactly which is the best way to tackle a tricky garden and this could become a difficult task.

Although some plants or trees may be on the homeowner's wish list, many will not fit into the scheme at all. Sizes and span of the trees will be very important so that roots or branches do not undermine the foundations of the home. Planted too near and they will weaken walls and other structures. Even security can be compromised by a tree being too close to a house where burglars will have a handy 'ladder' to gain access to upstairs windows.

Irrigation systems may also be necessary depending on the positioning of the property and many gardens will have to have these if the soil is too dry.

Even lighting will blend the landscape together as well as adding safety features. Many pathways will need subdued lighting but carefully placed individual lights will throw interesting and beautiful shadows across and through the garden to add interest. This could also be a great way to create cozy little niches for those quiet nights in or for entertaining.

Concreted areas will need to be created for seating, footpaths or barbecue areas etc. These professionals will be able to advise on concrete colors that will complement add interest to the whole effect of the outdoor area. the overall color scheme of the garden. Even patterned concrete is available to give special and different looks to the whole ensemble. It is surprising how colored concrete will add to any design and the patterns will just highlight unique innovations that have been blended in to the design of the area.

Along with all the services mentioned earlier, many companies will also provide a design service for any open space. The garden will be measured, mapped and design features will be suggested for the home owner to purchase without using the same contractor. However, for continuity and flow, it is probably best to use the contractor who has produced the design where the homeowner will have more control over changes and design alterations. - 30228

Learn About What Crabgrass Is

By Neoma Archer

Insects may be the thing that some people dread their lawns or gardens of having. There are also people who may look at drought as a phenomenon that their lawn would not want to experience. And then there are also those who would point at weeds as the worst thing that they would want to have in their lawn or garden. Weeds may look not that menacing but it can be difficult to deal with. You have to make sure that you take out all of them or else you may just see them growing back again. All they need to survive is just one good leaf and a good root and they are all set.

There are plenty of weeds out there. One of those that you should be on the lookout for is crabgrass. It does look a whole lot like orchard grass. But this one grows in patches. They will have side branches and these branches come with wide leaves that look like a star in a way. This weed will have wide blades as well as wide leaves.

The best period for crabgrass falls during the months of July and August. This period is known as their peak time. With that, crabgrass is also known as a summer annual grass. But before the weed blooms during this time, you can actually make sure that it does not get to that point. What you can do is take out your chosen herbicide. Choose a pre-emergent one so that the seeds of the weed do not germinate and so the weed does not grow.

Your lawn or your garden may be one place for crabgrass to grow but it can also grow in other locations like the sidewalk and even on roads with cracks. This is how well this weed can thrive. What you should do when you see them growing already outside your lawn or garden is you start your pre-emergent herbicide treatment. You do not want them growing on your lawn or garden now, do you?

You do not want your lawn or your garden to suffer from any kind of harm - especially the kind of harm that you brought. So if you are thinking that herbicide may do more harm than good, then you can opt not to use that. You can just manually attack the crabgrass. But the downside to doing that is that there may still be some roots or even seeds. Come next year, you will probably see the weed growing back again. - 30228

Soil Exposure And Surroundings Micro-Climate Landscape Needs

By Keith Markensen

The direction in which your house faces (north, south, east, west) is termed its exposure. This fact is of utmost importance in planning your garden. First of all, you will have to locate plants that will grow successfully in shaded areas according to the exposure; secondly, the position of shade trees will be most satisfactory if you determine before planting the spots where they will do the most good.

Generally speaking, a house whose front faces southeast is best adapted for the American type of home landscape. A more detailed discussion of this subject, will appear in a succeeding chapter.

Surroundings

Just as individuals are apt to reflect the habits and characteristics of their environment, landscape design should to some extent conform to the standards set by the surrounding area. This statement holds true only if the general surroundings happen to be pleasant. If, however, the land adjoining or close by to yours happens to be an eyesore, your landscape plan will emphasize seclusion and try to block off the undesirable view.

Soil

Your choice of design and of plants will also be controlled by the soil. For our purposes the two most important types of soil are (a) acid ( sour) and (b) alkaline ( sweet). The easiest thing to do is to work only with those plants that are best suited for your particular soil. However, some plants are so attractive and so well suited to home landscaping that you will feel it is worthwhile to change the type of soil in a part of the property to accommodate them. In fact, this practice is so common today that it is all but taken for granted.

You must also consider whether your soil is wet or dry. Poorly drained, wet soil is among the worst calamities that can befall any home gardener; stagnant water renders soil all but useless. Other wet soils produce good results because they have excellent aeration.

At the opposite end of the scale are the very dry soils ranging all the way to desert conditions. Here, of course, the list of plants that can be used is severely limited. Fortunately, the characteristic architecture of homes in arid regions is also limited and the plants that are in keeping with the climate and soil conditions also go well with the architecture. So, it is important for them to know all the great indoor plants.

Just as acid soil can be made alkaline, and vice versa, we have worked out ways to handle certain natural forces so that they are not too damaging to our efforts to beautify the landscape. The home gardener in Texas, for example, knows that their main problem is to sustain landscape plants successfully through the hot, dry season. To do this they apply a mulch which keeps the soil cooler and conserves its moisture for a longer period. As a result of such practices, there are in the nation's hot, dry sections beautiful home landscapes that "defy" nature. - 30228

Landscaping - Facing The Sun

By Keith Markensen

Orientation is the direction in which a house faces. If you are building or can choose among houses that face in several directions, you should always try for an orientation that takes maximum advantage of sunlight. Anyone who already owns their home can, of course, do nothing about its orientation.

Unfortunately, habit and tradition prevent most people who live in crowded urban and suburban areas from taking advantage of undoubtedly distress his more conventional neighbors. Nevertheless, such a rugged individualist would certainly make the interior of his home more comfortable and would also be able to use the garden area to better advantage. A few modern builders, however, have tried to improve orientation in a number of their large developments.

Rural

In rural areas, however, homes are farther apart and an owner need never think twice about orienting his house so as to take advantage of the surrounding elements.

Whether or not the house is parallel to the highway is hardly noticeable under such conditions, so the point should certainly be discussed with the architect or builder.

Ideal Orientation

Generally speaking, the ideal exposure is for the front of the house to face southeast or south . This permits a wider selection of plants to be used in front of the home where it is important to present a pleasant picture to the public, and it puts the more shaded part of the house toward the rear of the property where terraces, patios, porches, and service areas are usually found. In these locations fewer plants are required, so that heavy shade there, would not seriously interfere with the selection of plants.

Also, it makes it possible to take advantage of the shade cast by the house itself on hot summer afternoons. The need for large trees to supply shade would not be so great, and this would mean better gardening because more sunshine would fall on the ground. In addition, trees could then be planted in places where they would complete a satisfactory landscape picture instead of in places where they would cast the most shade on a porch or patio.

Microclimates

By taking advantage of orientation possibilities you can do much to bring under your control some of the "microclimates" of your property. Microclimates are little areas that exhibit some particular type of weather, such as a cool corner, or a hot side of a house, or a wind-swept spot on your lot. Each of them, although a part of the large air masses that make up the climate of the locality, differs from others only 5 or 10 feet away. By properly orienting the house, and properly locating plant material, you can control to some extent these small bits of climate.

For example, the rear wall of the author's home faces directly south. The two bedrooms are on that side. No shade is cast upon the roof or the south side of the house during hot summer afternoons, and large trees to make such shade would be undesirable

Nevertheless, the south wall of the house should be kept cool in summer so as to reduce the temperatures inside the house and permit comfortable sleeping. To control somewhat the climate on the rear wall of our house, we propose to construct a pergola along the entire back wall so that it projects for about six feet out from the house, and to plant two wisteria vines or variegated ginger to grow over it. Being deciduous plants, they will shade the walls in the summer and yet in winter allow the sun to come through and help warm that side of the house.

This is a perfect example of overcoming, at least partly, poor orientation by employing climate-control practices in a small way. The house wall will be shaded while the remainder of the backyard will be flooded with sunlight and we will be able to grow almost any kind of plants we desire. - 30228

How To Make This Year A Topnotch Garden With Bright Flowers

By Thomas Fryd

If you're a Northwesterner or a Northern Californian, put those dreaded memories of spring flood conditions behind you. Determine now to make this the year for a topnotch garden with bright flowers, finer shrubs and greener lawns.

Make this a year of changes. Dont be content with the same old flowers of yesteryear. Take a good look at the flower seed stands at your neighborhood seed store and select lots of those brightly colored packets.

One way to prevent your garden from looking just like every other garden in the block is to select some of the less familiar annuals.

The "big three" - petunias, marigolds and zinnias - may be planted heavily, but at the same time be adventurous and try plants such as the exotic bells of Ireland, linaria and nemesia (especially good for covering a bed where spring bulbs are planted), appealing dwarf dahlias, fast-growing cosmos for hedge effects, and mixed gourds for their wonderful harvest of curiously shaped fruits in the fall.

The cool weather annuals such as calendula, sweet alyssum, larkspur and nasturtium, can be sown in the open ground now. The seeds will germinate quickly if the ground is kept moist.

But theres more to March gardening than seed planting. Its the time to finish planting roses; begin to do the spring pruning; plan for summer bulbs; start spraying or dusting the garden for disease and insect control; and sow some backyard vegetable crops.

Timing of these jobs depends on the region you live in. If youre gardening in the Southwest, youre probably up to your ears in chores right now. But as you go northward to the Canadian line, the pace slows down. But in these areas, too, once the ground warms up, gardening will start in earnest.

How is your lawn?

Except in the colder spots of the Northwest where the soil usually cannot be worked, March has always been an ideal lawn planting month. Then it is warm enough for the seed to germinate rapidly yet early enough in the season for the grass to develop into a thick, healthy turf before the summer heat arrives. If you are starting a new lawn, dig the soil to a depth of 6 to 12 inches.

Better than digging, of course, is a mechanical tiller. This piece of equipment will pay for itself because it does so many other jobs, in addition to preparing a lawn site. At least look at renting one!

Remove all rocks from the soil and then roll it. The usual advice at this point is to sow the grass seed. However, youll find it worthwhile to soak the soil instead, to encourage the weed seed to germinate. Then you can dispatch the weed seedlings with a chemical weed killer like Round-Up. Ten to twelve days later you can plant your grass seed, with a lot more confidence and the knowledge that a few weeks hence you wont be on your knees pulling out unwanted weeds. The secret of getting a lawn off to a good start is to keep the seed bed moist.

Children should share in the spring gardening enthusiasm, too. Give them a spot to grow some nasturtiums and some radishes, and you may win a garden convert for life. Its true that theres nothing new about nasturtiums or radishes, yet their very speed of growth means they must have been designed to win the hearts of young gardeners. In 21 days from sowing, the youngsters will be eating plump red radishes. In 35 - 40 theyll have good-sized nasturtium plants and a couple of weeks later, incredulous bouquets of honey-loaded nasturtium blooms. Part of the fun of growing nasturtiums is to suck the nectar from the base of each flower after the tip has been pinched off.

Your backyard vegetable garden design and plan can be started now. Outdoors, radishes, spinach, peas and parsley can be sowed. Indoors, sow early cabbage, cauliflower, tomatoes, celery, eggplant and, in the Northwest, lettuce. In most coastal areas with lawn irrigation system California lettuce can be planted outdoors practically the year round.

Perennials that can be divided now include most of those blooming after June. Some of these are Shasta daisies, campanulas, helenium and rudbeckias. Some perennials, such as peonies, appreciate being left alone for twenty years or more. But generally speaking, its time to use the dividing knife on most perennials about the third year.

Transvaal daisies, though hailing from South Africa, will withstand Northwest winters west of the Cascades as long as the soil drains well. In the other sunny, warm parts of the West, Transvaal daisies really thrive. Set out husky young plants now. The blooms are available in all colors and are excellent for cutting. - 30228

How to Decorate Around an Outdoor Bench

By Chris Crawford

Outdoor benches aren't really just for parks. They've taken the place of patio swings; love seats; and are known to be used as lounge chairs in our dens, here and there. Why so? They're comfy and provide that warm feeling of spending a day, out in the sun.

For use inside the home, a bench tends to become the main piece inside the room it's going to. It's quite chunky for furniture since most of these benches are made from a combination of sturdy hardwood and cast iron. Since its design alone, places it as uncharacteristic for indoor use, you should downplay this by emphasizing its presence in the room, all the more.

Some ideas that can make an bench even more enjoyable include: placing it next to a water feature, covering it with an awning or climbing plants, add additional seating near it for a conversation area, adding a campfire pit.

Think of a recreational park and then turn your den into a room that looks like one. Hang something for the birds, by the window. Buy a bird bowl or make one out of papier mache. Making one won't cost you as much as buying a new bird bowl.

If your outdoor bench is to go on your porch, then get that Victorian parlor room look with the following suggestions. Set up side tables beside each arm of the bench. Put a miniature plant on top of the table, preferably one that has round, ornamental fruit growing on it. Add a few more items such as small, standing frames which encase butterfly specimens or leaf and flower types.

Place a collection of vintage books on these tables and small bowls of potpourri. Now all you have to do is to wait for a warm night and a full moon. Then you'll really be able to enjoy your new chair, out on your porch.

For a romantic get together at home, use it instead of a love seat. Group a few silk and satin pillows together, on the bench. Use a bright flower arrangement to fill up a large size vase that's just as high as your bench.

Drape a long string of faux pearls around the recliner of the bench. Then, the only thing missing is who'll be kissing who in the next round of spin the bottle, don't you agree? - 30228

Viburnums A Bird Magnet

By Kent Higgins

To the neat gardener mulberry might be a nuisance with its messy berries dropping on the ground and purple mulberry splashings on the bird bath, but it is a joy to birds. At least fifty-two varieties of birds delight in the fruit of the mulberry, which lasts from June until September.

June is a happy month for birds as well as humans, the month of long sunny days and fragrant nights when the honeysuckle perfumes the night breeze and the song sparrow wakes to sing a sleepy serenade to the summer moon.

And whenever honeysuckle is mentioned one usually thinks of the common Japanese honeysuckle that climbs over porches and fences. This will take the place over unless sternly kept in check. Within the dense growth catbirds or chipping sparrows locate their nests, and in winter the visiting white-throated sparrows make their headquarters in the shelter of the nearly evergreen foliage.

The viburnums, with their flat clusters of flowers which later develop into berries in the fall, attract the birds. Arrow-wood has dark blue fruit, and sheep-berry, also called nanny-berry, has showy flower clusters nearly 5 inches across followed by blue berries that are both sweet and edible.

Handsomest of the viburnums is the cranberry-bush, sometimes referred to as high-bush cranberry. The large clusters of bright red berries among freshly green leaves are a fine sight in autumn. According to old botanical texts the cranberries make an "agreeable jelly," but to make this jelly one will have to race with the birds, who make them disappear as fast as the dogwood berries.

The leaves of the cranberry-bush seem impervious to frost. Long after other shrubs are dried and shriveled the cranberry-bush is still a summer-like green. Sometimes you think it has forgotten about winter.

Many of our popular shrubs and perennials like hibiscus plants are native plants that have been brought under cultivation. Sometimes the process is reversed and a shrub escapes from the confines of the garden to make its way to the wilds where it leads its own life and gets on in the world without benefit of such items as pruning shears and fertilizer.

Such is the snowberry's career. From a prim orderly existence in old-fashioned gardens it wandered into the great outdoors, and there it has managed to survive among its less sheltered relatives of the honeysuckle family. The little round white berries, like tiny snowballs or camphor balls, are not eaten by birds as fast as the cranberry or dogwood berries; eventually, however, they too go, especially after they become a little droopy and brown and when more desirable fruit is no longer available to the hungry birds. - 30228

Garden Shed Plans - Take Your Time Before Choosing a Plan

By Robert Oriley

Today when it comes to garden shed plans you will find that there are many different types to choose from so finding the one that meets your particular requirements the best shouldn't prove to be very hard. But before you rush into getting your garden shed plans you need to take certain factors into consideration beforehand.

The factors that you are going to have to take into consideration before you purchase your garden shed designs is what it will be constructed from, what you will be using it for, what kind of foundations will be laid for it and how much you have available to spend. The amount of money in your budget is what will really determine the kind of shed that you can build.

In this article, we look closely at the factors mentioned above which will help you decide on the many garden shed plans available that will be the most suitable for you.

1. What Materials Should The Shed Be Constructed From?

Although most sheds are generally made from wood you need to remember that after they have been erected they need to be cared for. Annually, you will need to inspect your wooden shed to make sure that the protective coating is in good order and the roof hasn't become damaged. If there is any damage to the shed then repairs will need to be carried out to prevent the damage becoming worse which may then result in you having to take the shed down and replacing it at a later date.

Therefore, if you happen to be someone who doesn?t have the time or money to maintain a wooden shed you would be better off making yours from metal or vinyl. These types of garden shed designs require little or no maintenance. Generally, just washing them down regularly to remove dust or dirt from building up on the surface should be sufficient.

2. What Will You Be Using Your Shed For?

By determining how your shed will be used is what will then determine how large or small it should be. If you are just storing gardening equipment in yours, then one that provides ample storage space as well as enough room to allow you to get the equipment in and out easily should be sufficient. Generally, a shed that measures 6ft x 8ft should be more than sufficient for storing gardening tools in. However, if you are intending to keep very large pieces of garden equipment in yours then a large shed with double doors would be your best option.

3. What Should The Foundation Of The Shed Being Made From?

If your budget is somewhat restricted when it comes to building a garden shed, making a timber framework should suffice. However, if at all possible, it is far better if you can lay concrete foundations for your shed. As well as ensuring that the surface on which the base of the shed is placed is even, the concrete foundations also help to prevent moisture in the ground from seeping up in to the shed floor.

4. What Is Your Budget?

As we mentioned above, how much you have in your budget for building a shed is going to determine the kinds of garden shed plans you will want to consider to use. If you are intending to build a large shed then more materials will be needed, which further inflates how much you will have to spend on the project.

5. Is Planning Permission Needed?

When it comes to you deciding which of the many garden shed plans you like to use, you must find out if you need to get planning permission before you start building it. If you intend to go for garden shed designs where the building measures over 100 sq ft then you need to seek permission from the local planning authority before you begin constructing it. If you don't check building regulations when building a shed of this size, first, not only could you end up being fined but also be ordered to dismantle the shed as well. - 30228

Applying The Rules Of Real Estate To Landscaping

By Keith Markensen

Geographical location and climate will largely determine which plants can be used on your property. A garden in the New York City area might emphasize such plants as the Yews (Taxus) and Japanese Andromeda (Pieris japonica). A similar home located in Central Texas would have to rely on entirely different plants to achieve the same sort of effect, e.g., Junipers and Yaupon (Ilex vomitoria). Again, a third location, on the West Coast, say, would need a plant setting different from those used in the East or the South.

Topography

The topography or "lay of the land" is another factor which must be considered when planning a landscape design. It will affect not only the basic layout of your property, but also the type of plant and turf or other ground cover you will use.

Picture a home located on a hillside in any mountainous region. On such property, in order to develop a comparatively level area of any size at all, it would be necessary to construct expensive retaining walls, which might very well be beyond the means of the owner. Since it is difficult if not impossible to maintain a good lawn on a steep hillside, it will be necessary to select another type of ground cover that will be more suitable for the slopes.

Contrast the situation described above with a home located on the flat topography of such sections of the country as Kansas, Nebraska or South Florida. Here, practically an entire landscape design can be laid out without your having to worry about the handling of sloped areas. Indeed, if the land is monotonously flat, changes in elevation are often purposely introduced to provide additional variety in the garden picture. For me, i prefer to put a tarzan dracaena because it has an attractive leaves and its good in landscape design.

Consequently, topography as well as geographical location will have a decided effect on the design and execution of your gardening plans. Keep these facts in mind when thinking about what kinds of plants you wish to have. - 30228

Chuck Rosenthal's Landscapes

By Penny Logan

Well-known for his paintings of still life and people, artist Chuck Rosenthal also paints landscapes. The Clearwater, Florida, artist has done some very interesting scenes.

A Rosenthal landscape could light up a room. The scenes he paints are areas that he knows well, distinctively Florida. A principal characteristic of his paintings is the radiant Florida sun - not seen directly but reflected with glowing oranges and yellows against the grasses, trees, water and buildings that decorate his landscapes.

"Bellaire Beach" is a painting not actually of a beach, but of a glowing stately Bellaire home possibly as seen from the beach. The home is a typical Florida villa type of architecture, with perfect landscaping, grasses and palms. What makes the painting enchanting is the reflection of the light on the building - those radiant shades of orange and yellow.

Not a common subject for a landscape painting, "Florida Waterworld" shows wetlands with a big white house in the background. Even the grasses growing in the wetlands reflect that glorious Florida sun. Although most people would not think of such a marshy, boggy land as a place they would wish to paint, Rosenthal makes it appealing and a place you would want to visit.

"Houses on the Marshlands" is another Rosenthal landscape with shining yellows and oranges. Typical white Florida houses in the background make the sparkling marsh in the foreground stand out.

"Water's Edge" shows a reflective lake, autumn trees and again, white houses in the background near the edge of the lake. The colors again mirror the sun. The composition of this painting puts forward the beauty of nature, leaving the creations of man (the houses) in the background.

Most viewers will not be able to ask the artist in person what thoughts inspired him to paint these landscapes. But perhaps we should appreciate that the artist is inviting us to contribute to the artwork by creating your own ideas of what the painting communicates.

An outstanding artist will allow each viewer to be a part of the creative process by not forcing a message down your throat. Splurge on it - enjoy viewing art by contributing to the creation. - 30228
