Landscape Lighting: How It Can Change Your Landscape

By Jeremy Szechenyi

Landscaping is something that many homeowners strive to improve, but some don't know to the extent that the word covers. The lawn is part of the landscape, but things such as flowerbeds, trees, ponds, fountains, pool areas, garden, wooded areas, patios, verandas, and decks are also included. Working directly on those things can improve the appearance of your landscape, but landscape lighting can do help to refine it. The following are a few ways to improve your landscape and house with landscape lighting

1. Work on accentuating the front of the house with spotlights.

2. Light up paths with path lights.

3. Light up high traffic areas with general landscape lighting.

4. Improve the ambiance with specialized lighting.

The first way is to highlight your house with spotlights. A spotlight focuses light on a concentrated area. Focusing one on your house will help to make it the focal point of your landscape.

Second, make sure to light up the formal and informal paths with path lights. These lights can make a path look more formal, and well thought out. Path lights are lights that spread indirect light towards the ground.

Third, utilize good general lighting to areas that are high traffic, such as a deck, patio, veranda, or porch. These can be things such as wall sconces, floodlights, or post lights.

The fourth thing you want to do is to use specific lights to improve the atmosphere. Chandeliers and step lights both cast soft glows over areas and help make the atmosphere more inviting.

The Landscape around a house, whether simplistic or involved, can benefit from some nighttime accents from landscape lighting. There are so many choices to choose from that you will be sure to find something that works for your taste and needs. - 30228
