Dealing with Post Caps and Finials

By Louis Parker

When you venture into the world of post caps and finials it's very easy to get confused as to which one is which. One reason for this is finials are often pictured or displayed on top of the cap and it's easy to think they come as one piece but they don't. They also have different functions.

Post caps serve a very important objective; protect the post from the elements that cause rot and decay. By capping off the top you stop the majority of insects and water that could get into the deepest pores of the wood.

However, even though you place a post cap on the post that alone is not enough because you do need to apply a good sealer to the post cap after you paint or stain it to match. If you are leaving it natural then just seal it with a good waterproof sealer.

Another thing you can do is make sure you purchase your outdoor wooden products out of good weather hardy woods like a kind of cedar or redwood. Both of these woods are very good for outdoor use and if you seal them with a good sealer you will be in great shape for years to come; as long as you reseal per the instructions. You can also purchase a type of synthetic cap that paints like wood as well and just follow the instructions.

The finial is much more a decorative ornament than a post cap. That is not to say that you cannot find post caps that are decorative but finials are made to be placed on top on the post cap and the ending result can be stunning. Finials normally come with the lag screw that is used to attach it to the post cap and instructions to find the middle of the cap for placement.

You will want to follow the recommended instructions that come with the finial as well in regard to painting, staining and sealing the wood. Whatever you do, make sure you get the coats evenly done prior to installing them on the post cap.

Many people prefer to use post cap lights for outdoor lighting in areas that are hard to reach. This can be accomplished by using solar or low-voltage post cap options. If you have an area that has electrical access or you want the light hardwired, there are some inline post cap options as well. Either way, you can use these caps to light up deck or fence.

You have a lot of products and options to choose from in regard to both post caps and finials so it will be important to know what you really want your yard to look like as well as the function. The most important thing to remember is that you must protect your posts and the rest is all for fun and looks. - 30228
