By Tom Vandeventer

One of the best ways to make your small home feel much larger is by expanding the living space to the outdoors. There are many people that are enjoying living outside the box on patios and in outdoor living spaces. As summer turns to fall and days begin to get shorter, the evenings begin to get cooler. At times this can ruin the joy of living on the outside unless you have a propane patio heater.

According to where you live, you may find that a patio heater is necessary to enjoy even cool summer evenings or early mornings. The heaters are easy to start or stop according to your needs.

Patio heaters are available in several styles. The umbrella heater is designed to conceal a five gallon propane tank in its base. The base supports a pole that elevates the heater into the air to prevent the possibility of burns. Heat from the flames is returned to ground level by the umbrella shaped topper above the heating unit.

If you have an outdoor fireplace, you may be interested in propane logs in that fireplace to provide the heat that is needed for the cooler months. Propane or gas logs provide the look of a fire by heating ceramic logs that radiate off heat back into the patio area.

Other patio heaters have the appearance of a fire pit. The fire pit can be metal or brick, but has a flame that warms the air in the patio area. The propane or gas flames in the fire pit are much easier to maintain and create no smoke or ash. You will not have to carry heavy firewood from a woodshed to the fire pit in order to keep warm. When you go in at night, your hair and clothing will not be covered in the smell of wood smoke.

An average ten by fifteen patio is sufficiently heated by one patio heater. Larger patios may require more than one heater to keep guests warm.

Many restaurants and bars are have installed patio heaters on their outdoor drinking and dining area. This allows them to cater to customers without breaking the new anti-smoking laws. Customers can still have a drink and go out to smoke without having to stand in the cold to smoke. This is a great way to increase your number of customers, especially those who are tired of smoking in the cold.

Restaurants find that the heated patio is a great way to extend their dining room and to lure in new customers. The tall fence blocks much of the problem winds and the heaters keep customers warm and happy. They have the freedom to enjoy outdoor dining on all but the coldest of winter days.

There are also patio heaters available that use different energy sources such as natural gas or electricity. Be sure that you check those heaters out in order to find what will work best for you. Enjoy the extra hours that a patio heater can add to the time you spend enjoying outdoor living on your patio. - 30228
