The Benefits of a New Garden Shed

By Matt Adams

Adding a small garden shed to your lot or property is a great way to add value and convenience to your home. Having a shed to store outside yard equipment in is very convenient. You won't have to clutter up your garage with the mower and various rakes and shovels hanging from the walls. For your garden shed to be functional you don't have to make it elaborate. A simple but workable shed could be built for substantially less than $1000. Depending on the features, size and style you choose, you could of course spend much more.

When you are debating about adding a garden shed, you will want to figure out the pros and cons so that you can justify if it is worth the cost for you. The three benefits that come to my mind right away are 1) it is convenient to store your garden tools or bikes and toys in a garden shed, 2) your belongings will be more secure in a shed, and 3) it makes for a neat and tidy looking backyard when you have a place to store things that otherwise might be piled up in corners or leaning against the house.

Protecting your equipment from the elements is another critical purposes served by a shed. Extended exposure to the sun and the rain will increase the wear and tear on your equipment. The best way to save money in your gardening budget is to keep your equipment in good shape. Failure to protect your equipment from the snow and freezing rain will clearly shorten the lifespan of the same.

How do you go about adding a garden shed to your backyard? There are a number of decent answers to that question. The right answer depends on your budget and building experience. The easiest option would be to purchase a pre-fabricated garden shed from a building store and have it delivered. These pre-fab kits can be found at Home Depot , Lowes or Canadian Tire. Another option would be to buy a garden shed kit. These shed kits can be found through many online distributors or at the stores mentioned above. A third option would be to build the shed yourself from scratch.

There are many choices available if you choose a shed kit - from metal, to resin, to wood. If you build yourself, you will probably end up building a wood frame, a shingle roof, and some type of off the shelf siding material. Although there are plenty of wooden frame shed kits available, some of the cheaper kit options will be some sort of metal, typically aluminum.

Installing a pre-built small garden shed will be just a matter of preparing the site base and calling to arrange for delivery. If you are going to built your shed yourself, you will probably require anywhere from 1-4 days, depending on the size of shed, and your construction experience. Ordering a kit will allow you to build even quicker, as everything has been planned out for you, and all the material are included. Whichever you choose, you are sure to end up with a garden shed that will be useful and attractive for years to come. - 30228
