Do It Yourself Roof Installation

The county code usually states that you must remove your old roof prior to the installation of new shingles. When you have your old roof removed be sure to replace any damaged or rotten wood. Now that you have a clean roof surface, install Atlas Gorilla Guard shingle protection. This keeps the underneath of your shingles cool and dry. Use 1 inch nails to secure it to the substrate.

Installing your own shingles is a breeze. The hard part is getting the material to run straight vertically and horizontally. The shingle manufacturer has a picture on the shingle wrapper showing how to mark your horizontal and vertical lines for roof application. Each shingle manufacturer are different. Most roofing contractors adhered to the rule of two inches hangover at the bottom of the home and one and a half inch at the vertical end of the house. You will need to have a partner to assist you with chalking all of your heart is all vertical lines. Once the lines are in place, it is imperative that you make sure they are equal from a vertical and horizontal standpoint. If you're vertical and horizontal alignments are incorrect your roof will be crooked.

All of the horizontal lines and vertical measurements shall be in place. Go back with a ruler and measure each line to ensure that they are square. If all of the measurements are square, then use a plumb chalk box to place your lines onto the tar paper. Use a red chalk for better visualization.

The lines are in place and now it's time to install the shingles. Place the first shingle upside down on the horizontal line and placed three nails into the material. Take the second shingle and place it on the horizontal line and the 36 inch vertical line. Placed three nails into the shingle material. Your third shingle will be placed on a 30 inch vertical line and it will articulate with the second shingle. Be sure to line the third shingle up horizontally with the water bonds.

The fourth shingle goes on to the horizontal line as well as the 36 inch vertical line. Each shingle shall receive at least three nail fasteners through the material so that it articulates with the substrate correctly. Now that you have the first few shingles installed, the process starts over again from the bottom up.
