Caring for your Plants

By Sam Bousaks

Sometimes you many not realize it, but your plants may not always need watering. Most of the time, over-watering the plants can kill them. There is a very simple way to check if your plants need watering. Just put your finger into the soil; if it comes out wet, don't water the plant!

Certain plants require different things for their growth, and it is important for you to know which plants require which things. Flowering plants, for example, require more K20 than foliage plants, which require more nitrogen. To help this, some slow release fertilizers can be mixed in with your compost to promote growth.

Plants like Sanseveria and Aspidistra require no sun, and can be placed away from a window while Spider plants need semi-shade. You can put plants like these near a window that does or does not get sunlight. Check the label to see what your plant needs.

Some plants only survive in certain temperatures. Some houseplants will survive in both cool and warm environments. If it is cold, don't consider putting your plants near a gas heater, as this could be very harmful. The same goes for putting a plant near air-conditioning during the summer.

Humidity also plays a role in the care of your plants. Some plants require relatively humid conditions, while some do not. A simple way to adjust the humidity for a plant is to "double-boiler" your plant, or put the pot inside a bigger pot, and fill the gap with compost or stones to keep in the moisture.

Re-potting is sometimes helpful for optimum growth, but some plants will not take well to being disturbed, while some plants are so small, they won't need to be moved. One way to check if your plant needs re-potting is to turn it upside down. If all you see is roots, re-pot! if not, chances are your plant will be okay where it is. - 30228
